It is a great source of history because achievements are depicted through inscriptions of Samudragupta's military achievements as:
His reign over the Magadha and over the adjoining areas like UP and Bengal stretching to Himalayan foothills in North.
It also depicts the capturing of Kota King by him.
Exterminating all the kings of Aryavarta by Him and making kings of forests his servants.

Answer:

The main source of Samudragupta’s history is an inscription engraved on one of the stone pillars up by him in Allahabad. In this inscription Samudragupta details his  conquests. His inscription is called Prashasti, the poet wrote in praise of the king. The inscription was composed by Harisena, the court poet of Samudragupta. The inscription describes Samudragupta’s Deccan Campaigns the names of nine kings of Aryavarta defeated by Samudraguptha were mentioned. The neighbouring states such  as Assam,Bengal, Nepal, etc occupied by the Gupta king were also mentioned in the inscription. The names of the foreign kings who paid homage to King is also mentioned in the inscription. So The Allahabad Pillar inscription is a great source of history
