Penicillin blocks the processes that form cell wall in bacteria.

Penicillin is an antibiotic that blocks the cell wall biosynthesis by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for cross linking of peptodoglycan layer of the cell wall (enzyme is transpeptidase) in bacteria.

This is the final step in the formation of the cell wall and therefore are bactericidal in nature.
