Given: The barometer pressure in Manila dropped 6 millibars (mb); then it rose 3 mb. After that, it dropped 14 mb and then rose 4 mb.

To find: The total change in pressure.

Solution:

Let the pressure measured by the barometer originally be equal to x. When it drops by 6 mb, the pressure changes to (x-6) mb. Then, it rises 3 mb and the pressure changes to (x-6+3) mb which is (x-3) mb.

After that, when it drops 14 mb, the pressure becomes (x-3-14) mb which is (x-17) mb. Then, it rises 4 mb and the pressure becomes (x-17+4) mb which is (x-13) mb.

The barometer initially measured the pressure as x mb and now, it is (x-13) mb. So, the pressure has dropped by 13 mb.

Therefore, the total change in pressure is 13 mb.
