Previous classification methods were simple and considered less characteristic features for classification of organisms.
Previously blue green algae (BGA) were classified as algae and placed under plant kingdom because BGA have chlorophyll and can do photosynthesis.
Now the classification criteria has evolved and biologists consider cell structure, nucleus, cell wall structure, mode of nutrition etc for classifying organisms.
Hence BGA are placed bacteria under kingdom Monera due to absence of well defined nucleus and membrane bound cell organelles.
