the bottom of a ladder must be placed 5 feet from a wall. the ladder is 13 feet long. how far above the ground does the ladder touch the wall?

It is clear that the wall makes a right angle with the ground. Therefore, we can apply Pythagoras theorem to get its sides.
Hypotenuse ^2= altitude^2+ base^2
altitude ^2=hypotenuse^2-base^2
=13^2-5^2
=144

Altitude/the point where the ladder meets the wall=12.(√144)
