The breakdown of pyruvate in absence of oxygen to give Ethanol, carbon di-oxide and energy takes place in the mitochondria. It is also called anaerobic respiration.
The pyruvate is converted to two lactic acid molecules and alcohol. The molecules ionise to form lactate.
Aslo, the NADH and H+ are changed into two NAD+ ions. These reactions occur in our muscular cells when there is a lack of oxygen
