The history of the British Raj applies to the time of British rule on the Indian subcontinent within the span from 1858 and 1947. The method of governance was established in 1858 when the rule of the East India Company was shifted to the Crown in the person of Queen Victoria who is 1876 was declared as Empress of India. The two methods which was used to gain control over India are;
Subsidiary Alliance
The doctrine of the subsidiary alliance was proposed by Lord Wellesley, who was the Governor-General from 1798 to 1805. Early during the period of his governorship, Wellesley embraced a policy of non-intervention in the princely kingdoms, but he later chose the policy of establishing subsidiary alliances. In this alliance, sovereign kings were not authorized to make any treaties and agreement with any other ruler of other state.
Doctrine of Lapse
The doctrine of lapse was the order of Dalhousie, who was Governor General, to seize the autonomous Indian States in 1848 A.D. This policy was based on the opinion that in the situation a ruler of subordinate kingdom perished without having his own child then the power of controlling over the Kingdom returned or 'lapsed' to the company.
