The British Residency was established in J&K in the year of 1885.
The British was apprehensive of Russian intentions towards India via Kashmir. So the British from the inception of Dogra rule in J&K tried to interfere in the affairs of Kashmir. Firstly an Officer on Special Duty was appointed by the British in 1851.The officer was literally apolitical and later British residency was established on 25th September 1885 during the rule of Maharaja Pratap Singh. Sir Oliver St. John was appointed the first British Resident in J&K.
