The compounds CHCl₃ and HF lead to the formation of (a) fluoroform, having a molecular weight of 70.

• The reaction between chloroform and hydrofluoric acid proceeds as follows :

CHCl₃ + 3HF → CHF₃ + 3HCl

Therefore, we see that chloroform and hydrofluoric acid react to form fluoroform (CHF₃) and hydrocholric acid (HCl).

• Atomic weight of C = 12 g

Atomic weight of H = 1 g

Atomic weight of F = 19 g

Therefore, molecular weight of CHF₃ = 12 g + 1 g + (3 × 19 g)

= 12 g + 1 g + 57 g

= 70 g

• Therefore, fluoroform is the product formed by the reaction of CHCl₃ and HF.
