The Damodar Valley Project was carried out with an aim to control flood along the Damodar River Basin and also to eliminate other problems.

The positive effects of the project are as follows:-

1) Irrigation facilities have been provided in those areas.

2) Soil erosion has been checked through regulated flow of water.

3) Public health has been promoted through control of malaria and other diseases by proper drainage of water.

4) Tourism has been promoted.

The negative effects of the project are as follows:-

1) The aim of controlling the flood along the Damodar River Basin has not been fully achieved as only four dams were built instead of seven dams.

2) Hydroelectricity had to be replaced with thermal electricity as the dams could not be used as power - generating dams.

3) Over utilization of forests took place hampering the lives of the animals and tribal people residing in that area.

4) Deforestation took place.
