let the 1st and 2nd man be x and y respectively.

it is given that

x – y = 8

=> x - 8= y

16 years ago their ages

= x-16 = 3

y-16 2

=> 2(x-16) = 3(y-16)

=> 2x - 32 = 3y - 48

=> 2x - 3y = -48+32

=> 2x - 3y = -16

=> 2x - 3(x - 8) = -16

=> 2x - 3x + 24 = -16

=> -x = -16-24

=> -x = -40

=> x = 40

hence, the elder one is 40 years old.
