Depth of sea water below the ship = 1500 m  = 1.5 km

Explanation:

Let say Depth of Sea water  = d m

Then Distance Covered by sound = d  + d  = 2d  m

( going down to depth & then coming back to sea)

Total Distance = 2d  m

Speed  = 1500  m/s

Time taken =  2 Secs

Distance = Speed * Time

=> 2d   = 1500  * 2

=> d = 1500

Hence Depth of sea water below the ship = 1500 m  = 1.5 km

Given:

Speed of sound in water= 1500 m/s

Time after which echo is heard= 2 seconds

To find:

Depth of sea water below ship

Solution:

As we know,

Distance = Speed × Time

So, here depth or distance travelled by the sound = 1500× 2 = 3000 m

In this case, the sound travels from the ship to the bottom of the sea and then comes back to the ship.

So, distance travelled by the sound is double to that of the depth of the sea.

Therefore, depth of the sea is 3000/2 = 1500m

Depth of the sea is 1500m.
