◆◆Living things feed◆◆

In order to function, and to grow, living organisms need a constant supply of nutrients. Animals and plants feed in very different ways. In animals, complex compounds (usually solids) are taken into the body, broken down by the process of digestion into a soluble form, and then assembled into the materials needed by the body. In plants, simple compounds such as carbon dioxide, water and minerals are taken in. These are then built into more complex compounds using energy from sunlight. This process is known as 'photosynthesis'.
Animals, like these lions, feed on complex solids which need to be digested before they can be used in the body.

◆◆◆Living things transfer energy◆◆◆

All living things need energy to move, grow, replace old cells, reproduce and so on. This energy comes from the breakdown of food into simple compounds like carbon dioxide and water. This breakdown process which provides useful energy is called 'respiration', and it occurs in both plants and animals. Respiration usually needs oxygen, which is taken from the air (or in the case of water creatures from the water)

Living things are organisms which exhibit characteristics of life. These features include the abilities to grow, reproduce, move, metabolize, respire, respond to stimuli, and adapt to the environment. For an organism to be recognized as a living thing, it must take in energy and use it to sustain life. Energy is thus critical for the survival of living organisms. Bacteria, animals, human beings, plants, and fungi are some examples of living things.
