Given :  The grades for a statistics exam are as follows: 3, 5, 5, 6, 7.5, 6, 5, 1, 10, 4.

To find : Which score is an outlier

Solution:

3, 5, 5, 6, 7.5, 6, 5, 1, 10, 4

arranging in ascending order

1 , 3  , 4  , 5  , 5  , 5  , 6 , 6  , 7.5  , 10

Median = (5 + 5)/2 = 5

1 , 3  , 4  , 5  , 5 - First Half

Q1  = 4

5  , 6 , 6  , 7.5  , 10 -  Second Half

=> Q3 = 6

inter Quartile tange = Q3 - Q1 =  6 - 4 = 2

Q1 - 1.5 * IQR  = 4- (1.5) *2  = 1

Q3 + 1.5 * IQR  = 6 + (1.5) *2  = 9

Data Range  1  to 9

Hence 10 is an outlier
