NO,The greatest damage inflicted on Indian forests was during the COLONIAL PERIOD.Because:-

1. In name of expanding agriculture, they cut forests blindly.

2. They also believed in enrichment plantation by which only one crop gets all priority and all other are neglected.

3. They also carried out extensive mining that depleted forests.

4. They also cut forests for railways. Wooden planks were also made from forests
