The Himalayas are known as young fold mountains . young because they have been formed relatively recently and have high peaks, deep valleys and fast flowing rivers. As fold mountains, they stretch for nearly 2,500kms. in length in a series of parallel ranges or folds . The Himalayas mainly consist of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.

when the Himalayas were rising out of the Tethys sea, the northern part of the peninsular plateau subsided and formed a huge basin. The rivers flowing from the mountains in the north and the peninsular plateau in the south filled this basin with sediments and Alluvial deposits , it led to the formation of northern plains in india.
