Answer:

a and be are incorrect electronic arrangements as they do not follow the octate configuration

it should rather be

a) 2,8,8,6

b) 2,8,8,5

hope it helps

The incorrect electronic configuration is 2,8,12,1 as it does not follow the Octet rule (option b).

  • The Octet rule states that an atom gains or loses one or more electrons from its valence shell in order to attain a stable configuration (of the nearest noble gas).
  • In an octet configuration, the element has 8 electrons in its valence shell (2 for hydrogen) and is completely stable, which means it does not react with other substances.
  • Each shell of an atom has a maximum number of electrons that it can accomodate. This goes in the order 2,8,18, and so on. While writing the electric configuration of an element, this should be followed.
  • In option 1 however, the configuration is 2,8,13,1. This is a case of unusual electronic configuration of chromium. Atomic number if chromium is 24 and when filled in this order the 3d and 4s orbitals are half filled, making it more stable than the configuration of 2,8,12,2. Hence, it is also a correct way of writing the electric configuration.
