The length and breadth of a playground are 52 m 60 cm and 35 m 40 cm respectively. Find the cost of
turfing it at 3.50 per square metre. How long will a man take to go twice round the field, if he walks at
the rate of 2 metres per second?

The cost of turfing is ₹6517.14

The time taken by the man is 1 minute 28 seconds

Given data :

The length of the playground = 52 m 60 cm = 52.6 m ( term of unit conversion 100 cm = 1 m)

The breadth of the playground = 35 m 40 cm = 35.4 m ( term of unit conversion 100 cm = 1m)

The rate of turfing = ₹3.5 per metre²

Number of walking round = 2

Speed of the man = 2 metre/second

• At first we have to calculate the area of the ground

Area = length × breadth

= (52.6 ×35.4) m²

= 1862.04 m²

• Now we have to calculate the cost of turfing by using the following mathematical formula

= (Area of the ground × Cost of turfing per metre²)

= (1852.04×3.50)

= ₹ 6517.14 (answer)

• Now,we have to calculate the perimeter of the ground

Perimeter = 2× ( Length + Breadth)

= 2×(52.6+35.4)

= 2× 88

= 176 metres

• The time taken by the man to complete the two rounds around the ground :

2 metres = 1 second

1 metre = 1/2 second

176 metre = 176/2 second = 88 seconds = 1 minute 28 seconds (answer)
