'The management of natural resources requires a long term perspective so that these will not merely be exploited to the hilt for short term gains'. What does this statement mean?

when one utilises the resources the person should make sure that he uses them in a sustainable manner. one should not compromise with the needs of the future generation. therefore natural resources should be managed in such a way that their perspective should be for long term use and the resources should not get depleted for short term gains.
