Some adjectives are used to compare persons or things. They have three degrees of comparison : Positive, Comparative and Superlative

  • Positive degree = No comparison
  • Comparative degree = for two persons or things.
  • Superlative degree = for more than two persons or things

some rules of degree of adjectives in English grammar :-

1) Comparative degree is usually formed by adding ( er ) and Superlative degree is usually formed by ( est ).

Example = short → shorter → shortest

___________________________________

2) when the adjectives ends with the letter (e) So only (r) and (st) are added.

Example = wise → wiser → wisest

___________________________________

3) When the adjective ends with the letter (y) and the (y) has a consonant. So, immediately before it the (y) is changed to (I) and (er) and (est) are added to make superlative and comparative degree/form.

Example = Happy → Happier → Happiest

___________________________________

4) When the adjectives ends in a vowels + consonant. So, the consonant is double and (er) and (est) are added to make Superlative and comparative degree/form.

Example = Big → Bigger → Biggest

___________________________________

5) When the adjective are long (more) and (most) are used with them to make Superlative and comparative degree/form.

Example = Important → More important → Most important

6) Some adjective form there Superlative and comparative degree/form in an irregular way
