Step-by-step explanation:

Given:-

The mean of 40 numbers was found to be 35. Later on it was detected that a number 56 was misread as 16.

To find:-

Find the correct mean of the given numbers.

Solution:-

The mean of 40 numbers = 35

Number of numbers = 40

Mean = 35

We know that

Mean = Sum of all observations/Number of all observations

=>Sum of all observations = Mean/ Number of all observations

=>Sum of all observations = 35×40 = 1400

Correct number = 56

It is mis read as 16

To be Corrected = 56-16 = 40

If 56 is misread as 16 then adding 40 to the sum of all observations

=>1400+40

=>1440

Correct sum of all observations = 1440

Number of observations = 40

Correct mean

=>Sum of all observations/Number of all observations

=>1440/40

=>144/4

=>36

Therefore,correct mean = 36

Answer:-

The correct mean of the given numbers = 36

Used formula:-

  • Mean = Sum of all observations/Number of all observations
