topic: carbon and its compounds

sub-topic: ethanoic acid (acetic acid)

Âηswεr:

the left side part of the formula of an ester (containing the CO part) is derived from the acid and the right side part of an ester is derived from the alcohol. So, in the ester C₃H₇COOC₂H₅, the acid will be C₃H₇COOH and the alchoh will be HOC₂H₅ which is written more conveniently as C₂H₅OH. Thus,

• the acid present in the ester C₃H₇COOC₂H₅ is C₃H₇COOH which is butanoic acid.

• the alcohol present in the ester C₃H₇COOC₂H₅ is C₂H₅OH which is ethanol.

the reaction of butanoic acid and ethanol to from this ester can be presented as:

\displaystyle\sf{ {C_3H_7.COOH} + {HO.C_2H_5} \xrightarrow{Conc. \: H_2SO_4} {C_3H_7.COO.C_2H_5}+ {H_2O}}
