Here is it:

The two boys had a great respect for themselves. They did not want to be seen as a character seeking sympathy so they were evasive in  disclosing their plans of their emigrating to America. The boys did not want to seek any sort of the help from the narrator as they wanted to deal with their problems and plans in their own manner.
