The gomashtas were the paid servants of the British. The English East India Company employed the gomashtas to serve as their agents in the colonies. These agents used to sign bonds with the Indian craftsmen and force them to sell their goods to the British. They used to fix the price at which the goods had to be sold.

In the districts the mamlatdars used to supervise the collection of taxes and also look after the law and order in the area. They worked under the British officers and collectors. They were given a fixed monthly salary of Rs. 70 to Rs. 150.
