Economically the first phase of 750 AD - 1000 AD is believed to be a decline because there were not enough coins available for the exchange purposes and there was a decayed condition of the towns in northern India there were not many agricultural activities going on because of the non-favorable conditions.
But after 1000 AD there was a revival of trade activities and agricultural activities. Arabs also settled on the coasts of India as important players in international sea trade, this helped the people India for making purchases.

The first phase of 750-1000 AD was the period of political instability and economic decline of India. The trade with Byzantine Empire which was the backbone of Indian economy declined. The two examples which show that the first phase of 750-1000 AD was the period of economic decline are as :

1.  Absence of coins especially gold and silver coins which shows there was empty treasury and economic decline.

2.  Absence of towns and craft specialization also shows there was economic decline.

3.  Emergence of feudal economy. As the treasury was empty, the officers were given land in lie of salary which lead to feudal economy.
