The position of three Elements X, Y and Z in the Periodic Table are given below: Group 16 Group 17 __ X __ __ Y Z (a) State whether X is a metal or non metal. (b) Which is more electronegative X or Z ? (c) Which is larger in size Y or Z ? (d) What will be the valency of element X and Y ? (e) What Name is given to group 17 elements ?

Answer:

please cross check the positions once again _x __ _Y Z, as it is not matching with the periodic table, if the position which you are referring to is like this

Group 16    Group17

-                      -

-                      X

-                       -

Y                      Z

then this can be answered like :

a). X belongs to group 17. There are 7 electrons in its valance shell. Therefore it tend to accept one electron to complete octet. Hence, it is a non-metal.

b). X is more electronegative than Z, because Cl (Chlorine) is more electronegative then Iodine.

c). Y is larger in size as, size decrease as we move in a period.

d). valency should be 1 (The atomic number of chlorine is 17 and the electronic configuration is 2, 8, 7. Therefore, the valency of chlorine is 1)

e). They are called “halogens” because they give salts when they react with metals.
