let price of pen be x
so price of book will be x+4
and price of pecil will be x-2
ATQ
5 (x+4)+2x+3 (x-2)=74
5x+20+2x+3x-6=74
5x+5x+14=74
10x+14=74
10x=74-14
x=6
so,cost of pen=6
cost of pencil=6-2=4
cost of book=6+4=10

Answer:

Cost of pen = Rs.6, Cost of book = Rs.10, Cost of pencil = Rs.4

Explanation

Let price of a pen be x rupees

Then, price of 2 pens = 2x rupees

Since, Price of book is 4 rupees more than price of a pen,

∴ Price of a book = x + 4rupees

∴ price of 5 books = 5(x + 4) = (5x) + (5 × 4) rupees = 5x + 20 rupees  (use distributive property to solve the bracket 5(x+4) ).

Price of a pencil is two rupees less than that of pen

∴ price of a pencil = x-2 rupees

∴ price of 3 pencils = 3(x-2) = 3x-3 × 2 rupees = 3x-6 rupees  (use distributive property to solve the bracket 3(x-2) ).

Total price of 5 books, 2 pens and 3 pencils = 74 rupees

⇒ 5x + 20 + 2x + 3x-6 = 74

⇒ 10x + 14 = 74

⇒ 10x = 74-14

⇒ 10x = 60

⇒ x = 6

Hence ,

Price of a pen = x = 6 rupees

Price of a book = x + 4 = 10 rupees

Price of a pencil = x-2 = 4 rupees
