Answer: p = -2      ;      q  =   -3

Step-by-step explanation:

x² -5x -6  =0

x² - 2x - 3x -  6   =   0

x ( x -2) - 3 ( x - 2 ) = 0

( x  -  2 ) (x  -   3)  = 0

On comparing with ( x +p) (x+q)=0,

p = -2      ;      q  =   -3

-2 and -3 are the values of p and q respectively.

The given equation is:

                  x² -5x -6  = 0

⇒     x² - 2x - 3x -  6   = 0

⇒  x ( x -2) - 3 ( x - 2 ) = 0

⇒     ( x  -  2 ) (x  -   3)  = 0

⇒  ( x  + (-2) ) (x  +(-3))  = 0

Thus, p = -2 and q = -3
