This dam is built across the Ghataprabaha River, Krishna River Basin. This dam can fulfil the "irrigation needs" to as much as 8,20,000 acres of land, and is a source of Hydel power generation. The "dam" is named such after The Raja Lakhamagouda Sardsai, the Zamindar of Vantamuri, who was a philanthropist.
