first, substitution reaction is a reaction where chlorine atoms have the tendency to replace hydrogen atoms one by one.this happens only in presence of sunlight where the reaction happens fast.
one group of atom take the place of another in this reaction.methane reacts with chlorine,
CH4 + CL2--------------> CH3CL +HCL (in the presence of sunlight as said)
