the scale on a map is 1 : 500000
two towns are 7 cm apart on the map.
work out the actual distance between the towns.
Give your answer in kilometers.

It means 1 cm on the map is 500000 cm in real reality. So you multiply 7 cm by 500000 and that will give you how many cm the towns are apart. Then you convert cm to km by dividing it by 100,000 because there are 100 cm in a meter and 1000 meters in a km. So (7 x 500,000) / 100,000 = 35km
