1) The French society was feudal in outlook and was divided into three estates. With the peasants and labourers forced to pay taxes and Tithes to the clergy and the aristocrats, dissatisfaction was widespread. 
2) The Bastille prison was where the regime put its prisoners and it was captured by the crowd during the revolution. 
3) There were food shortage and the bakers stockpiled bread. While taxes were raised to fund France’s treasury and involvement in American war, the peasants got no help from the ancient regime, which ultimately was toppled.
