It is true Sadao’s servants reflect the mindset of general people. Their reaction to Tom’s presence in Sadao’s house was pretty ordinary. They could not tolerate their master helping the poor POW. They even left their jobs in protest.
However, Sadao and Hana showed unprecedented maturity, kindness, and humanity. They went many extra miles to help a man in need who was their enemy also by circumstances. They represent those rare human beings who have broader outlook on life.
The servants of Dr. Sadao, were sceptical about him treating an American soldier. They would have preferred the doctor, hand him over to the army. It shows their narrow mindedness. They did not see the wounded American soldier as a human being, but only as an enemy.
During the war, Dr. Sadao was a Japanese surgeon and Hana was his wife. Hana washed the wounded soldier herself since the maid and the children’s nanny refused to wash him. Under their care, the American gradually recovered and after a few days, Dr. Sadao helped the American to escape in a small boat, equipped with supplies.
