(2) Basidiomycetes are the group of fungi in which sex organs are absent, but plasmogamy is brought about by fusion of two vegetative or somatic cells of different genotypes.

Kingdom Fungi is a group of heterotrophic organisms found in different habitats. They show huge diversity in morphology.

Fungi can be edible, poisonous, can be used for research.

Different classes of Fungi:

  • PHYCOMYCETES: These are found mainly in aquatic habitats, humid places, as parasites on plants, etc. Example - Rhizopus, Mucor
  • ASCOMYCETES: These are mainly decomposers or parasitic. They are also called Sac-fungi. Example - Cleviceps, Neurospora
  • BASIDIOMYCETES: These are tree barks, soil, on the human body. Vegetative reproduction occurs by fragmentation. Example - Agaricus, Ustilago
  • DEUTEROMYCETES: The asexual and vegetative modes of reproduction are unknown for this class. They are helpful in mineral cycling.  Example -  Alternaria, Trichoderma.

Fungi like Neurospora are used in reasearch and Claviceps is used in manufacturing hallucinogenic drug.
