Indirect/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being told to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: Raven said,"I'm going shopping." (Direct)

Raven said that she was going shopping. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'you' changes to 'I', 'will' changes to 'would', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'yesterday' changes to 'the previous day' and many other words will have to be made. If the dialogue is a question, then 'said' changes to 'asked'. Also note that punctuation marks other than a full stop (.) cannot be used in indirect speech.

The student said to the teacher,"May I go to the library, Sir?" (Direct)

The student asked the teacher if he could go to the library. (Indirect)
