The sum of 2 numbers is 80 & the greater number exceeds twice the smaller number by 11. Find the numbers.

Solution :

Let, the two numbers are x and y, x > y

Given that,

x + y = 80 .....(i)

x = 2y + 11 .....(ii)

Putting x = 2y + 11 in (i), we get

2y + 11 + y = 80

⇒ 3y = 80 - 11 = 69

⇒ y = 23

Then, x = 2 (23) + 11 = 46 + 11 = 57

∴ the two numbers are 57 and 23
