Let the present age of son is 'x' years and Son is 'y' years.

Now, according to the question...

x+y = 45......(1)

Five years ago the age of father = (x-5) years and the age of son = (y-5) years.

Again, according to the question....

(x-5)(y-5) = 4(x-5)

=> (x-5)(45-x-5) = 4(x-5) [ from equation (1) ]

=> (x-5)(40-x) = 4(x-5)

=> 40-x =4

=> x = 36

and from equation (1).....

36+y = 45

=> y = 9

Thus, the present age of father is 36 years and the present age of son is 9 years.
