Let the numbers be x and y
Given x + y = 1000 ......... (1)
x2 − y2 = 25000
⇒ (x + y) (x − y) = 25000
⇒ 1000 (x − y) = 25000
⇒ x − y = 25 ............. (2)
Add (1) and (2), we get
x + y = 1000
x − y = 25
2x = 1025
∴ x = 512.5
Put x = 512.5 in (1), we get y = 487.5
