the sum of two number is 40. one number is 10 more than the other. what are the number?

let the 2 numbers be x and y.
let x be the greater number.
therefore, x = 10 + y
According to the question x + y = 40
x+y =40. ........1
x= 10+ y. .......2
subsituting the value of x from equation 2 in equation 1
10 + y + y = 40
10 + 2y = 40
2y = 40-10
2y =30
y = 15
x = 10+ y
x = 10+ 15
x = 25
