let the no. s be. x and y....

according to question....

x+y=9...........1
x-y=3....{ y to be cancelled }......2

2x=12..
x=6......put this in equation 1....

x+y=9
y=9-6

y=3......

so no.s are 3 and 6.....

Concept:

The question involving sums and difference of two numbers can be easily solved by converting them into simultaneous equation or equations involving two variables

Given:

the sum of two numbers is 9 and the difference of the two numbers is 3

Find:

We are required to find the two numbers from the given data

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y

From the given data,

sum of the two numbers is 9

x + y= 9   let this equation be 1

difference of the two numbers is 3

x -y = 3   let this equation be 2

Now adding the two equations i.e. 1 and 2, we get:

x+  y+ x- y=6+3

2x=12

x=6    (by dividing the equation by 2)

x+ y=9

y =9 -6=3

Hence the two numbers are 6 and 3
