Time at a place depends on its longitude, the earth rotates eastwards therefore people living in eastern part see sun rising earlier than that of western part. India extends across nearly 30 degrees from Gujrat to Arunanchal Pradesh. As per the outcomes of 1884 International Meridian Conference , Globe was divided into 24 standard time zones each extending over 15 degrees longitude. As a result of this India could have gone for two Time Zones but it decided to choose only one time zone. The rationales behind this were firstly to avoid confusion of having two time zones ( means two different times) since people at large were illiterate at that time and this also facilitated administrative ease. Since India decided to have one time zone; watches show the same time across country no matter in which part of the country we are living.
Choosing one time zone though avoided confusions but created a bit of problem for people of North East states. As sun rises relatively early there, they have to wait for rest of India for official works and timing. Scientists took this issue in different manner and requested advancing Indian Standard Time by half an hour to reduce the evening peak energy deficit more effectively and without the difficulties of dividing the country into two time zones or introducing Day light saving. They computed the economic benefit of this change and found that half an hour
saving on lighting leads to an energy saving of 2.3 billion units of energy per year for the country. This saving would partly reduce the deficit that we suffer as doing this we can utilize Sunlight in better way.
