see both exert pressure because pressure=Force/area

there is different only in magnitude

let me solve,

Brick X.

1m²=10000cm²

so 100cm²=.01m²

since,P=force/area
=100/.01=10000pascal

similarly,Brick y

p=100/.25=400pascal

so brick X exert more more pressure

Given :

  • The surface area of the base of a brick X is 100 cm².
  • The surface area of the base of the brick Y is 250 cm².
  • Each brick weighs 100 N.

To find :

The pressure exerted by the bricks X and Y respectively.

what is pressure ?

pressure is amount of force applied on a surface per unit area. unit of it is N/m² or Pascal.

In short, It is the ratio of applied force to the cross sectional area of surface.

i.e., P = F/A

for brick X

pressure exerted by the brick X = force applied by brick X/surface area of brick X

= 100N/(100 cm²)

= 100N/(100 × 10¯⁴ m²)

[ ∵ 1 cm² = 10¯⁴ m²]

= 10⁴ N/m²

Therefore the pressure exerted by brick X is 10⁴ N/m².

for brick Y

pressure exerted by the brick X = force applied by brick X/surface area of brick X

= 100N/(250 cm²)

= 100N/(250 × 10¯⁴ m²)

= 4 × 10³ N/m²

Therefore the pressure exerted by brick Y is 4 × 10³ N/m².
