A bit is the most basic(smallest) packet of information (conventionally) in computer science.
A byte is made up of 8 bits of information.
A kilobyte is therefore, made up of 1,000 bytes of information.
A megabyte is made of 1,000,000 bytes of information.
A gigabyte is made up of 1,000,000,000 bytes of information.

Mind you, a 500 page text book would fit comfortably in 1 megabyte so just 1 gigabyte is still an amazing amount of data to handle :D
