Role of philosophers:-

Philosophers created awareness among the French people.

  1. John Locke wrote the book "Two Treatises of government" sought to refute the doctrine of the divine and absolute right of the monarch.
  2. Rousseau wrote the book "The Social contract" told that Monarch should rule according to general will of the people. He carried the idea forward proposing a form of government based on social contract between people and their representatives.
  3. Montesquieu wrote the book "The Spirit of Law" give the theory of separation of power.
  • The idea of these philosophers were discussed intensively in Salon and coffee-houses and spread among people through books and newspaper.
