Once I was travelling to Chennai by train. It was a long tiring journey. The train had to be my lodge on wheels. So I settled myself in my cabin comfortably. The train belonged to Rajdhani class and travelled quite fast. I made friends with the co-passengers who were sharing the cabin with me. Most of the time, I was engrossed in the new novel I had started reading recently and was carrying along.

Watchfulness, alertness, and caution have been my first principles and watchwords that determine my response to an emergency. Owing to the benefits I have reaped from them, I love to be cautious all the time. My cautious attitude has saved me many a loss and untoward consequence.

Often I would look out and see the ever changing vistas outside the train window. The rumble of the wheels would often echo in the ears. Thus ever moving, shaking amidst jolts the train was heading towards the destination.

The night fell; the lights came to life and outside darkness studded with star-like lights of fleeting buildings kept reminding me I was a traveler. I slept on my ever shaking and vibrating berth. In the middle of night I woke up to go to the restroom. As I got off the bunk I saw a group of youngsters embarking on the train from a platform where it had halted for a while. I had not seen these boys before in the coach. I felt suspicion rising in my heart. Given the latest rise in anti-social and terrorist activities across the country, I felt extremely suspicious about these boys. I began weighing my options. I decided to wait until the train halted at the next station.

After fifteen minutes the train stopped at Bhopal. The first thing I did was inform the security about the suspicious characters who had suddenly disappeared into thin air. The security checked the coach. To everyone’s shock and dismay, the security found a bag that belonged to none of the passengers in the coach. Later on it was found it had a bomb in it. The security thanked me for my circumspection and prompt action. My caution had saved many lives once again!

Saroj, a seventeen year-old-girl, was going to Kolkata to appear in an entrance–exam. She boarded a train and  occupied her seat. She was nervous as she was going all alone to Kolkata for the first time. Her uncle lived  there and had promised to meet her at the station. The train left the station at the right time. She waved  goodbye to her parents and looked around in her compartment.

There were not many passengers that day.  She started looking out of the window. Everyone settled after some time. The train gathered speed and  suddenly a group of youngsters pushed in. They were six in number. All of them seemed to be ruffians and they  looked threatening. There was a sudden silence in the compartment. The passengers were sensing hostility in  the youngsters who were looking at all corners of the compartment, perhaps having a look at the passengers.

Everyone was scared. The look on the faces of these youngsters made the passengers scared. They were  alarmed and were expecting something bad to happen. Then all of them scattered in the whole compartment  and took their seats. They were talking loudly to each other. Soon the next station arrived. The train stopped  there for two minutes and then started moving at a slow speed. Suddenly someone screamed.

The youngsters  rushed towards the gate and enquired what had happened. A lady was crying bitterly. She told them that her  four-year-daughter had been left behind at the station. One of them pulled the chain while the other jumped  down. It was risky but he didn’t care. He fell down but got up and ran at full speed.

Meanwhile the train had  stopped. After five minutes, people could see that young man coming towards the compartment holding a  little girl‘s finger. He handed the girl to her mother and the train moved again. The woman was grateful to the  young man. She had no words to thank him. And people sitting in the compartment were feeling remorseful  for thinking bad about those men. The train picked up speed and everyone was normal again.
