there is an immaterial reality that exists seperate from the physical world

If the universe was formed out of inert, physical matter, yet something nonphysical and as complex as consciousness evolved from that very same material, why should we stop the process at ourselves? Why couldn't far more complex things that have the attributes of what we would think of as a soul, have also come into being? 
 
I'm not making an assertion, it's just food for thought. You can call it a philosophical question if you like
