Percentage of votes polled for winning candidate = 54%
Percentage of votes polled for defeated candidate = 46%
Percentage majority = 54 - 46 = 8%

Let the number of valid votes be 'x'.

8% of x = 1620

8/100 × x = 1620

x = 1620 × 100/8

x = 20250

So, the number of valid votes are 20250.

Let the total number of votes polled be y.

10% of the votes are invalid.

90% of y = 20250

90/100 × y = 20250

y = 20250 × 100/90

y = 22500

So, the number of votes polled are 22500.
