1) coal is a bulky material, therefore it is hard to transport it to long distances, and has high transport fees.

2) whereas oil is highly explosive, for the risk, it is more expensive to transport.

3)Coal is also soft and thus can get crushed and reduced to ash, reducing the actual weight of the coal.
