Dharampala, the son of Gopala, expanded and the strengthened the Kingdom.
- Dharampala ruled from 770-810 A.D, was a Hindu ruler who converted himself into Buddhism. For the expansion of his empire, he was following the policy of Matrimonial alliances. In this, he married to Rannadevi, a Rashtrakuta princess.
- He also assumed the title of Paramabhattaraka, Paramesvara, and Maharajadhiraja.
- He ruled for around 40 years in which there were a power shift for sometime to Pratiharas. He also maintained several vassal state and conquered the territory from Bay of Bengal to Delhi and Jalandhar in the north to Vindhya hills in the south.
- Dharampala also involved in the Tripartite struggle and took advantage of the situation and conquered Kannauj from the Pratiharas. After conquering Kannauj, the rulers of these region bow down before him and paid a revenue yearly in sake of no further attack by the Palas.
- During his lifetime, Dharampala set up many monastries. One of which is Nalanda University. He also indulge in huge pittance for the working of Nalanda where the students from different regions of the world came and learn.
- It was told that for maintenance of Nalanda University, he gave the revenue generated from 100 villages nearby.
