Well, I think that this is a very interesting question. First of all, I think that it reflects ignorance.  I am not sure if many people had an idea of what the real issues were.  They possibly were protesting simply because others were doing so.  For instance, Wal Mart could bring huge benefits to the farmers by strengthening the supply chain.  The FDI policy required that 30% of the investment be made in the back end infrastructure. Farmers would have gained significantly because of this. Research has shown that about 30-40% of the food goes a waste. One major reason for this is the lack of adequate infrastructure (for instance, cold chains).

Secondly, it reflected this fear of behemoths.  This fear of multinationals monopolizing the market.  It also showed how people with vested interests (traders) do not allow change to happen.  

Thirdly, it shows how we are still stuck in the Swadeshi mode, when clearly the model is outdated. Personally, I think that Swadeshi is great. But there should be no bar on foreign firms entering our markets and Indian firms entering foreign markets. Let people across the world have as much choice as possible.
